Defining the Guest Experience at Six Flags Qiddiya City
The creation of guest experiences within themed and experiential architecture requires a precise blend of theatrical storytelling and the permanence of architectural design. At Six Flags Qiddiya City, UMAYA has applied these principles across a massive 320,000 square meter site, ensuring that lighting does more than provide visibility. It acts as a primary tool to sculpt physical spaces, cue specific emotions, and direct guest attention without calling attention to the hardware itself. As the team responsible for the interior and exterior lighting experience for all guest viewable spaces and attractions, UMAYA worked alongside Gallegos Lighting Design to ensure that every one of the 28 rides and attractions, from high intensity thrill rides to family oriented zones, supports a cohesive narrative.

Effective lighting in a project of this scale relies on its ability to reinforce the identity of the environment. Working closely with the Client’s lead Creative Director and his design team, the UMAYA team made thousands of decisions regarding the look, function, and technology of each fixture to support the unique cultural heritage of Saudi Arabia embedded in the park. In the central hub known as the Citadel, the lighting design had to account for the massive billowing canopy inspired by traditional Bedouin tents, providing an atmosphere that feels both grand and welcoming. From this central gateway, the design transitions into six distinct lands, including the City of Thrills, Steam Town, and Discovery Springs, each requiring a bespoke lighting signature that aligns with its specific theme.

Modern experiential spaces like Six Flags Qiddiya depend on advanced control systems and LED development to deliver a precise visual experience. UMAYA integrated these technologies directly into the rides and structures, transforming static facades into active storytelling elements. This level of detailing, unseen in any other Six Flags in the world, allows the architecture to shift between ambient backgrounds and high energy show environments. These systems are automated and adjustable based on the time of day, utilizing sensors to manage light levels and foot traffic. This technical integration ensures that while the park embodies the rich heritage of its location, it operates with the efficiency and environmental responsibility required for a project of this magnitude.
Beyond the aesthetics, the functionality of the lighting design at Six Flags Qiddiya is critical for safety and guest flow. The design team carefully balanced the technical requirements of the 10 thrill rides with the more whimsical and accessible lighting needed for the 18 family attractions. By focusing on the interplay between light and shadow, UMAYA has created an environment that feels responsive to the guests moving through it. The result is a park where lighting is a flexible and powerful tool, ensuring that the exclusive rides and highly detailed environments are presented with the clarity and impact they deserve.
