Monte VI Chapel

LOCATION: MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY
USE: WORSHIP
SCOPE: INTERNAL LIGHTING DESIGN

Developing a completely new lighting design on an existing building always poses great challenges, especially in terms of physical electrical points and load allowances. Even more when the building is for worship purposes, since deeper sensibilities have to be considered, and light takes a whole new dimension and significance.

The lighting scheme is based on a series of strategies which complement each other. Narrow beam projectors illuminate the structural nerves and arches supporting the vault, giving visual depth to the chapel, adding drama and providing the necessary illumination levels at the nave. The side vitraux are grazed from the inside, revealing its craft and exposing them as vital elements on the façade. The religious figures are accentuated with concealed narrow beam projectors, providing visual targets and adding three dimensionality to the space.

The outcome is a welcoming spiritual refuge, with a clear understanding of its architecture.
